Anthelmintic and giardicide in oral tablet

Composition by tablet:

Febantel 525mg; pyrantel (embonate) 175mg; praziquantel 175 mg.

Pharmacological properties

Anthelmintic and giardicide. It is active against certain nematodes and cestodes and Giardia spp.

The fixed association, pyrantel and febantel act synergistically against nematodes (roundworms, hookworms and whipworms) and Giardia in dogs. In particular, the spectrum of action covers Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum, Trichuris vulpis and Giardia spp.

The spectrum of action of praziquantel covers cestode species of the dog. In particular, it includes all Taenia species, as well as Multiceps multiceps, Dipylidium caninum, Mesocestoides spp., Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis. Praziquantel acts against all intestinal phases of these parasites. Likewise, it also has activity against Giardia spp.

The anthelmintic and giardicidal efficacy of febantel is due to its ability to inhibit the polymerization of tubulin to microtubules. The resulting disruptions in metabolic and structural function deplete the parasite's energy reserves and kill it within 2-3 days.

Interactions and incompatibilities

The anthelmintic effects of this veterinary drug and piperazine-containing veterinary drugs may be antagonized when the two drugs are used together.

Indications

Dogs: Anthelmintic against certain nematodes and cestodes of the dog.

– Nematodes: Roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina). Hookworms (Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum). Tricurus vulpis (Trichuris vulpis).

– Cestodes (Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus multilocularis, Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Mesocestoides spp.).

Treatment of infestations caused by the protozoan Giardia spp. in puppies and adult dogs.

Contraindications

Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients.

Do not administer during the 1st and 2nd third of pregnancy.

Adverse reactions

On very rare occasions, mild and transient digestive tract disorders such as vomiting and/or diarrhea may appear. In individual cases these signs may be accompanied by non-specific signs such as lethargy, anorexia or hyperactivity.

The frequency of adverse reactions should be classified according to the following groups:

– On very rare occasions (less than 1 animal per 10000 animals treated, including isolated cases).

Route of administration

Orally.

Posology

Dogs: 1 tablet/35 kg. Administer half a tablet more for every 17.5 kg of additional weight.

Administration and duration of treatment:

The tablets are scented and studies have shown that they are palatable and that most dogs (88%) take the tablets voluntarily.

The tablets can be administered with or without food. It is not necessary to limit access to food before or after treatment. For the control of nematodes and cestodes, the tablets must be administered in a single dose.

The treatment program should be established in agreement with the veterinarian. As a general rule, the deworming regimen for adult dogs (over 6 months of age) is every 3 months. If an owner chooses not to deworm their dog regularly, a viable alternative would be to perform stool tests every 3 months.

In specific situations such as lactating bitches, young puppies (under 6 months) or in environments such as kennels, more than one treatment may be necessary, so the veterinarian should be consulted to establish the most appropriate deworming protocol. Similarly, in certain situations (such as infestation with a high parasite load of nematodes or Echinococcus) additional treatments may be necessary and the veterinarian can advise on the need for repetition.

Do not use in dogs weighing less than 2 kg.

To ensure administration of the correct dose, weight should be determined as accurately as possible.

For the treatment of infestations caused by Giardia spp., the recommended dose should be administered for 3 consecutive days.

Thoroughly clean and disinfect the animal's environment to prevent reinfestation, especially when dogs live in groups such as kennels or kennels.

Special precautions

Special precautions for use in animals:

Parasites can develop resistance to any anthelmintic of a given class, after frequent and repeated use of an anthelmintic of that same class.

Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the veterinary medicinal product to animals:

In case of accidental ingestion, consult a doctor immediately and show him the package leaflet or the label.

For hygienic reasons, persons administering the veterinary medicinal product directly to the dog or mixed with its food should wash their hands after administration.

Other precautions:

Giardia spp. can infect man. See a doctor if your dog is infected.

The veterinary medicine contains praziquantel, which is why it is effective against Echinococcus spp., which, despite not being found in all EU countries, is increasingly common in some of them. Echinococcosis represents a risk for man. Since echinococcosis is a notifiable disease to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the specific recommendations of the competent authorities on its treatment and subsequent monitoring, as well as on the safety of people, must be followed.

It does not require any special storage conditions.

After perforating the blister, keep the unused tablet fractions wrapped in aluminum foil inside the blister.
