Pharmacological properties

The product is an insecticidal, acaricidal solution for topical use that contains an association of an adulticidal active ingredient, fipronil, in combination with an ovicidal and larvicidal active ingredient, (S)-methoprene.

Fipronil is an insecticide/miticide that belongs to the phenylpyrazole family. It works by interacting with ligand-gated chloride channels.

(S)-Methoprene is an insect growth regulator (IGR) of the class of compounds known as juvenile hormone analogues that inhibit the development of immature stages of insects.

Interactions and incompatibilities

None known.

Indications

Dogs: The product can be used against flea infestations, alone or associated with ticks and/or biting lice.

– Elimination of fleas (Ctenocephalides spp.). Insecticidal efficacy against new infestations by adult fleas persists for 8 weeks. Prevention of flea multiplication by inhibition of the development of eggs (ovicidal activity) and of larvae and pupae (larvicidal activity) generated from eggs laid by adult fleas for 8 weeks after application.

– Elimination of ticks (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor variabilis, Dermacentor reticulatus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus). The product has an acaricidal efficacy in dogs that persists for up to 4 weeks against ticks.

– Elimination of biting lice (Trichodectes canis).

The product can be used as part of the treatment strategy for the control of flea allergy dermatitis (FAD).

It can be used during pregnancy and lactation.

Contraindications

In the absence of available data, the product should not be used in puppies less than 8 weeks of age and/or puppies weighing less than 2 kg.

Do not use in sick animals (systemic disease, fever...) or convalescents.

Do not use in rabbits.

Do not use the presentations intended for dogs in cats, as this could lead to overdose.

Adverse reactions

Very rare reactions reported after use of the product include: transient skin reactions at the point of application (skin discoloration, local hair loss, itching, redness) as well as general itching or hair loss . After administration of the drug, excessive salivation, reversible nervous signs (increased sensitivity to stimulation, depression, other nervous signs), vomiting, or respiratory symptoms have also been observed.

In case of licking, a brief period of excessive salivation may be observed mainly due to the nature of the excipient.

Administer the recommended dose.

No adverse reactions have been observed in safety studies conducted in the target species, in puppies from 8 weeks of age, growing dogs, and dogs weighing approximately 2 kg treated at once to five times the recommended dose. The risk of adverse reactions may however be increased when overdosed, therefore animals should always be treated with the correct pipette size corresponding to their body weight.

Route of administration

Topical on the skin.

Posology

Dogs: The dosage corresponding to the minimum recommended dose is 6,7 mg/kg of fipronil and 6 mg/kg of (S)-methoprene, by topical application on the skin. So:
